ABOUT HEPATITIS
"Hepatitis" refers to any disease that results in inflammation of the liver, regardless of how that disease is contracted.
Hepatitis A
Hepatitis A is an acute infection transmitted primarily by the fecal-oral route. This is when an uninfected person ingests food or water that has been contaminated with the feces of an individual infected with hepatitis A.
Infection can be prevented by receiving the hepatitis A vaccine.
Hepatitis B
Hepatitis B can be both an acute and chronic infection.
It is transmitted through contaminated blood and sexual fluids.
Infection can be prevented by receiving the hepatitis B vaccine.
Hepatitis C
Hepatitis C can be both an acute and chronic infection that is transmitted through contaminated blood.
No effective vaccine is available at this time.
